Perry is the father to Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry, a director. On her role on the ABC sitcom Roseanne (in flashback), her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's first television roles. Parents, however, didn't want her to take on acting roles until she was an adult, fearing the effects of stress. Perry claimed that she felt shy to act during high school, but started acting in the theater at Northwestern University as a way to meet new people after she transferred to the university from Boston University. Perry following her graduation from Boston University, moved in New York in search of acting roles on television. Perry was able to land small roles in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. In the end, the feeling of homelessness led her to California in search of theater jobs. She performed on Broadway with her mother in The Other Place with her mother in 2013. In 2015, she performed with her father as well as Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. In the year 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes on ABC's drama The Family. In 2017, Perry performed a role as a support in the ABC political drama Scandal that starred her father. The same year she was asked to play a younger character of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again playing a young version of Mary Cooper's character. Despite the fact that she has a connection with her family to the character, she was offered the role through an audition.
